FireBirdFusion Creative Challenge of October 2017 – oh they are so trying to get me this time!

This seem to be somewhat of a theme, every time I ask my kids to clean out their toys or clothes, they give me something to transform as a challenge. They absolutely love it. This is the second time, and apart from Halloween times, orange seem to be another theme of theirs. The last challenge I got, the orange baby T-Rex toy, became the Jurassic Hide n’ Seek hair ornament. Could I possible top that?

So….this is what I have got to work with. A pair of worn out orange pants.

Well…this is what I have to work with. My son’s worn out orange manchester pants. And the challenge? Make it into a belt, mum, he said. Pumpkin shaped belt.

Make it pumpkin shaped, he said.

It will be interesting to see where we’ll go from here.

Shop update: FireBirdFusion kimono robes

I am so excited to introduce this – my beautiful line of FireBirdFusion kimono robes. I have been making them for myself quite some time, but somehow it did not occur to me that others would love them as well.

They make the most beautiful cover ups for your bellydance or burlesque costume, or why not wear them to a party or dinner invitation? My favorite use is still to just slip into one of these beauties in the morning when having that essential wake up coffee. It simply makes the world a prettier place.

FireBirdFusion’s 1920s style ooak kimono robe, handmade of vintage saree fabric.

I make the robes out of vintage saree fabric and trims which I buy on my travels to India. As with all my creations, I want to use as much vintage material as possible. I don’t like to see the beauty and effort of such amazing craftmanship go to waste, and by using vintage material less chemicals are spread in our environment. All fabrics are carefully washed before being transformed into new shapes.

Some of my robes are made out of silk, others from synthetic fabric. What they do have in common is that every single textile used is carefully chosen by myself, they got the most beautiful and intricate embroidery with sequins or glass beads, and they are all unique, one of a kind creations.

Adding the trims to a lovely dusty pink saree fabric to create a FireBirdFusion 1920s style kimono robe.

The robes are usually not made to order, rather I make them in between other commissions whenever I find time. All currently available robes are found in the section FireBird costumes on my Etsy shop, so take a look there if curious to see what is in stock right now. I make them in sizes ranging between Extra small to Extra large (European sizes).

Since the fabric is vintage, they show sign of being loved and used, and as such there will inevitable be some sequins or beads missing. It is part of their charm. To make them last long, let them air after use. If you do need to wash them, gentle hand wash is recommended. For the silk robes, dry clean is the better choice.

Shop update: Beautiful vintage banjara jewelry

I have just added some beautiful pieces of authentic vintage banjara jewelry and DIY components in the FireBirdFusion shop – definitely worth checking out!

These beauties were curated by myself on my latest trip to Northern India.  Coins date all the way back to the 1950s and 1960s. All pieces are in good condition, but as expected with jewelry that has been around for so long, there are imperfections like missing stones or beads. But isn’t that is exactly what we love about them, the beautiful patina and the charm of being loved and worn?

There are a few of these beautiful banjara buttons available at the FireBirdFusion shop right now. I am just in love with the craftmanship visible in these vintage pieces. I am personally using them for headdresses and costume bras, but the options are endless.
